Question
Hello Rabbi, May I use unkosher mouthwash and toothpaste? Best
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for your question. There is a major argument amongst the Rabbis as to the status of products that one does not swallow, but none the less are “tasted” before being spat out (such as toothpaste and mouthwash), when they contain non-kosher ingredients. In general, it is certainly advisable to use products that have a Kosher certification on them when possible. However, if one is not able to easily get such certified products, there is good grounds to use toothpaste and mouthwash that do not have a kosher certificate. (For example, the London Bet Din rules “All toothpastes and mouth washes are permitted since they are not eaten. Even if one was to swallow a small amount, this would not be considered the normal way of eating.”) Here is a link to an article that discusses this issue from the OU – https://oukosher.org/blog/consumer-kosher/kashruth-issues-of-toothpaste/ Blessings.
