Question
Hello Rabbi, 1. I want to buy a lip balm. The only ingredients are beeswax and beef tallow. It is not kosher. It is made up of only those two ingredients so it is technically edible and might even taste good. Can I use it? If so, can I eat dairy if I have beef tallow on my lips? 2. If I eat meat then use my lipstick, can I use that lipstick if I want to eat dairy? Best, Sophia
Answer
ב"ה Shalom I received a similar question some years ago and I followed the guidelines given by the Star K Kashrut agency. Mainly saying, one may use lip balm even though it doesn’t have kosher supervision since it is not meant for meant to be eaten and the accepted practice is to allow the application even of non-kosher substances to the skin . Even if one unintentionally would swallow a bit of the lip balm, the non-kosher ingredient would be nullified by 60 times more kosher ingredients. Though issues of mixing milk and meat do apply even with meat of a kosher animal even though it was not properly slaughtered, in this case, as said the little bit of non- kosher lip balm would be nullified by 60 times more kosher ingredients. All the best
