Question
May one pronounce hashems name in Hebrew when reading tanach in English? For example Im becoming more religious and for "Shnayim Mikrah" Instead of Unklos I read the translation in English.
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for your question. Yes, you may certainly use Hashem’s names when reading the Tanach in English – and this may actually be more correct. Often the translation into English is quite lacking. For example, when translating the names in a blessing often one sees “the Lord our G-d” – but “A-donie El-okianu” should translate to “G-d our Lord”. In any event, whenever it would be correct to use the Name of G-d in Hebrew, one may use it when reading in English, in place of the English translations. Blessings.
