Question
A passenger reserved a taxi for a ride to an airport in another city. The flight was cancelled, the taxi had already arrived at the passenger's home. The question is: The taxi company demands that the passenger should pay for the canceled reservation, even though the flight was canceled at no fault of the passenger and against his will. The airline is responsible for the cancellation. Does the passenger have to pay?
Answer
In many countries there are traffic laws and regulations that determine cancellation fees. The taxi company and the passengers are bound by these laws and rules and must follow them. If there are no such rules in your country, you should follow the local prevailing practice. If this is also not clear, a compromise must be reached with the taxi company. Where the case is between Jews, it is recommended to contact a local rabbi or rabbinical judge, who will hear both parties and rule according to our holy Torah.
