Question
I am involved in a shidduch with a man whom I will be supporting. I have no issue with this, I want to know if I can stipulate in the Kesubah that I get two years of his Limud. I do not want money. This may sound strange but as limud is more important than money and we are both " not rich" I prefer this to _Zuzim..._esp.since a zivug sheini is not worth much.. Can you give me an answer citing sources .. Thank You.
Answer
Today, we generally don't add additional stipulations to the set wording of the Ketuva. But if you like, you can sign with him an additional contract stipulating that or whatever you wish. In general, if you were making such an agreement with a stranger or friend, such contracts have been done many times, but between a married couple, almost all agreements are better off being agreed upon, based on trust and loyalty, and not a legal/technical contract. Marriage is a loving partnership of soul-mates where each one deeply wants to help the other both physically and spiritually, which is much more beautiful and lasting than an average legal contract. Especially when the matter at issue is really a three-way partnership, between the spouses and Hashem! In fact, even without any official agreement, the wife automatically receives full partnership in her husband's learning, not just for 2 years, but until 120 years! Even halachic sources which refer to "selling" one's reward for a mitzva, it adds merits to the "outside" person but really doesn't detract from the doer, but regarding a couple, their spiritual cheshbon (account) is really a joint-account anyway, as they are together in the world-to-come as one complete (male and female Godly) soul. Hope it works out!
