Funeral of a non Jew

undefined

Rabbi Elchanan Lewis

Question
Is it permissible to attend a funeral of a non Jew, particularily if one knows ahead of time that it will be an open casket? This would be done out of respect for the deceased and to comfort the family, who are friends.
Answer
A Jew can enter a non Jewish cemetery and attend a non Jewish funeral. (see Bava Metziah 114a) The only prohibition is to enter a church if the ceremony takes place there.
