Question
When do you need to wash hands 3 times and with a vessel? It is my understanding that waking up in the morning requires 3 times and from a vessel. But what about: 1) After using a restroom 2) Touching your nose or face 3) Grabbing something from the floor 4) Touching the floor I ask about these because I do these during the work day and I cant wash my hands with a vessel at work. I feel it can be overwhelming to have to wash hands ritualistically after such common activities. What actions require a "hygienic" washing (just under a sink normally) vs a ritual 3 times and from a vessel? Furthermore: I have noticed that when pouring water, some water splashes from my wrist or from the sink. Does the risk that this water is going into the original vessel then mean that the washing must be restarted? Thanks
Answer
ב"ה Shalom and Moadim Lesimcha First let's start with after which things you are NOT required to wash your hands. I found no requirement in two major Halacha books which compile or the needs to wash your hands (Yalkut Yoseph Siman 4 of Rav Yitzchak Yoseph Shlit"a or Piskei Teshuvot Siman 4) to wash your hands for ritual reasons (leaving hygiene aside) after touching the floor or grabbing something from the floor. Neither did I find a requirement in the above books to wash your hands after touching the face or nose. However, some poskim are stringent in regard to secretions from the nose or ears. (See Mishna B'rura 92: 30.) After using a restroom, some poskim don't require washing your hands from a vessel. However, those who follow the kabbalists require 3 times from a vessel. Other examples, require washing without 3 times touching your feet or shoes, or scratching your hair, or concealed parts of your body. In these instances, if water is not available other means of cleaning such as hand wipes suffice. There are additional instances of having to wash your hands, after a haircut, cutting one's nails, leaving a cemetery . The main requirement for washing the hands 3 times is after waking in the morning. You should simply raise your hands high enough so when washing the hands they do not get wet again from the water you poured on them . After leaving a cemetery the custom is also to wash 3 times alternatively like after waking in the morning. Before eating bread , the hands are to be washed twice while some follow the custom of the Ari z"l and wash 3 times. All the best
