Nusach Eretz Yisrael
Question
Do you know of Nusach Eretz Yisrael? The movement to create one all encompassing Minhag based on Talmud Yerushalmi. If so, what is your opinion of this?
Answer
Your question is historical in nature. The thought is that during the Geonic period , Askenazi Jewry followed the custom of Eretz Yisrael which is based upon the Yerushalmi while other countries followed the customs of the Geonim of Bavel. A book written in the early Geonic period whose author is unknown, was called "Hachilukim bein Anshei Hamizrach Uvne Eretz Yisrael" (Margaliot edition, Jerusalem, 1928)= The Differences Between the People in the East and the Inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael. The book discusses the differences between the customs of the Jews of Eretz Yisrael and the Jews of Bavel. The name and content of the book seem to indicate that there were two distinct customs and there is no mention of their unification. The historical background does not change the obligation today to follow and keep the customs of one's parents.
