Question
Dear Rabbi I have following questions about Bore Nefashos, Id greatly appreciate your guidance.
1) According to Sephardic custom/ Persian, how much should I eat in what time span to be able to say this bracha
2) How long after eating I have to make this bracha
3) If I eat a kazayit of any product that requires saying Meein Shalosh with a kazayit of other products that requires Bore nefashos (rice, apples, milk), do I omit saying Bore nefashos?
Thank you
Answer
Hello and blessings,
1-2. The Yalkut Yosef writes:
“The minimum amount one must eat in order to recite Birkat Hamazon is a kezayit [measured by volume, and if one is not proficient in measuring volume, it may be estimated by weight, which is approximately 27 grams]. Even if one is not yet satiated from the meal, rabbinically he is already obligated in Birkat Hamazon once he has eaten a kezayit of bread. Ideally, one should be careful to eat the kezayit within approximately 7.5 minutes, which is the time known as kedei achilat pras. A kezayit is half an egg, and accordingly its measure is 27 grams.”
However, I wrote here, in the name of several important poskim, that approximately 16 cubic centimeters is sufficient to obligate a beracha acharona:

3. In this case say Bore nefashos. (However, the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef is that one should not recite a beracha acharona at all in such a case).
