Question
If one would like to do a Mitzva like traveling 2 hours to visit a person who needs Chizuk, but he is hesitant from doing so as he would have to take off from work and lose a few hours of wages, may he deduct what he would have made from Maaser, to enable him to do the Mitzva?
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for your question. The use of “maser” monies is first and foremost for the poor. However, we rule that it may be used for other mitzvot also. That being so, one could use maser money to do the mitzvah of helping out another Jew and giving them Chizuk. It makes no difference if one uses wages already earned, or (as you suggest) the time it would take to earn the wages. May you merit to be able to always give to others, and be blessed in every way.
