Question
I am intending to get a work visa, though I dont understand really the difference, between making Aliyah and getting a work visa. I still have to completely keep the law of the land regardless. though there are some yidden that find a way around this and say that they dont accept the government and even wont abide by it.
My question is, if I make Aliyah and accept the money from the government, will this take away from my portion in the world to come, whereas I could just go onto work visa and find my own way possibly to support myself. Thank you
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Firstly, I strongly advice you to get personal advice from those who can guide you with real knowledge of the practical ramifications of each option. Nefesh Be’Nefesh is a great place to turn to.
From a halachic perspective – making “Aliyah” means coming to dwell permanently in the land of Israel. What visa you do that on does not change the mitzvah. As to taking money from the State, I do not think this takes away from the mitzvah, as the aim is to help make the mitzvah of settling the land more successful. In all likelihood, taking help from the State will enable you fulfill the mitzvah of living here, and doing many other mitzvot at the same time, with greater strength. As you write, without taking this help you might “possibly” be able to support yourself – but by taking it, there is a greater likelihood of your success. When it comes to getting help in order to more successfully perform a mitzvah, it is certainly the correct thing to do.
Please G-d, your Aliyah will be so successful, that you will give back manyfold to the Jewish people in Israel, and after 120 good years, in heaven the “accounts” will be such that Hashem will be very happy that He “invested” in your Aliyah (through the financial help of the State), and got such good “returns” (in the form of your tremendous deeds done in the land).
Blessings.
