Question
Shalom Uvracha Harav, Re the MAASER Kesafim, please what expenses exactly we can deduct from our income so the remaining will be subject to maaser ? Is it minhag or an obligation ?
Answer
There are three legitimate opinions in the poskim regarding ma’aser ksafim (giving 10% to tzedaka): a. 10% is an obligation b. 10% is an important mitzvah but not an obligation c. 10% is a midat chasidut (worthy and upright) Anyone who can should definitely give 10%. Many figure out the 10% after taxes. You can figure your synagogue dues, and most of the tuition which you may pay for yeshiva education for your children as part of the 10%, for the cost in the US is so exhorbitant and the money does go to a yeshiva. In any event, it’s a good idea, in addition to figuring out the amount, to also give even a small nominal amount (even 5 cents) every day, to keep up that positive character trait of giving regularly. You should also know that doing volunteer work can be considered tzedaka and ma’aser ksafim, as well, for “time is money". Gmar Chatima Tova!
