Question
Rabbi, there is a Rashi that quotes a Midrash that says the Satan shows an image of Moshe dying and being brought up to Shamayim. How can the Midrash say the Yetzer Hara shows an illusion, why don’t we say the Yetzer Hara did the same thing with the miraculous setting of Mount Sinai chvs? And the Yetzer Hara is an Angel, so it only does what HaShem wants it to do, and why would an Angel meant to trip up the people feed them for 40 years somehow and protect them?
Answer
Shalom uvracha,
There is no doubt that hashem doesn't want to 'trip us up'. The opposite is true. He said in his torah מי יתן והיה לבבם זה להם ליראה אותי ולשמור את כל מצוותי כל הימים
Meaning that Hashem said that he wishes that the Jews will keep his Torah and mitzvot always.
The point is that if this world had no 'nisyonot' (trials and difficulties) it would lose it's purpose. The purpose is to overcome the nisyonot and keep the Torah and mitzvot.
If Hashem wanted angels that had no nisyonot he could have made millions more of them. He therefore gives us nisyonot and is happy if we overcome them.
The Zohar (mentioned in the Tanya in the end of chapter 9 and the end of chapter 29) compares the yetzer hara to a zona (a prostitute) that the king hires her to trip up her son, so that his son can prove that he can overcome the nisayon. The king is actually hoping that his son doesn't fall for the nisayon and so does the zona too. She also knows that her real success that would make the king happy is by the king's son not falling for her.
Similarly, the yezer hara is actually happy if we don't succumb to do aveirot.
If you want to look more into this topic see the Maharal(Tiferet Yisrael 48) who explains at length according to the Gemara that Hashem didn't help Am Yisrael overcome the yetzer before chet haegel because Hashem wanted to leave an opening for Am Yisrael over the generations to do teshuvah (repentance) just like that great genreration did. Additionally, he explains that it should not be taken literally that the satan showed them Moshe's bed but rather the truth seemed so obvious to them logically, that it was as if the satan showed them the bed.
All the best!
