אמרו ליה לרב, אתי גברא רבא אריכא לנהרדעא ומטלע, ודרש כלילא שרי. אמר מאן גברא רבא אריכא [דאטלע] לוי. ש"מ נח נפשיה דרבי אפס ויתיב ר' חנינא ברישא, ולא הוה ליה אינש ללוי למיתב גביה, וקאתי להכא. ודילמא נח נפשיה דר' חנינא, ור' אפס כדקאי קאי? ול"ה לי[ה] אינש ללוי למיתב גביה וקאתי להכא. אם איתא דר' חנינא שכיב, לוי לר' אפס מיכף הוה כייף ליה.

א. כל כח פועל לפי מדת הכח האצור בו להוייתו, וכל דבר נערך בהכרעתו לפי מגמתו ותכליתו. כל המון הכחות הרבים והאיתנים שבעולם, השוטפים והולכים במרחבי הבריאה, הנם הולכים ומתרכזים כדי לחולל ע"י כולם יחד, נפש חיה מאירה ומשכלת, הבוחרת בכל עז חילה בטוב האלהי ובאור החפץ העליון. ההתרכזות הזאת מוצאת לה מקום בנפש הצדיק, שהעלה את כל עז נשמת חייו ועומק כל חפצו לתכלית היותר נשגבה ונהדרה, שהיא עומק חפץ אלהי עולם, בורא קצות הארץ, אשר לא ייעף ולא ייגע ואין חקר לתבונתו (עפ"י ישעיה מ, כח).
ב. המאמר היוצא מחפץ לבב נשמה זאת, חובק בכח וזר[ו]ע עזו כל המון הכחות הנדרשים לחולל יצור נפלא כזה, ומלא עז כזה, ומתאים לכל המשקל התכליתי של כל הכרעתם של הכחות הכלליים המשמשים לתעודתם זאת.
ג. ע"כ, איתניותו של אומר קדוש ונשגב זה הוא גדול ונערץ יותר מכל כח איתן ונשגב אשר בטבע המציאות וכל המון הכחות האדירים. ע"כ יבקע הררי-עד וינצח כל צורי מכשול, ולא ישוב אחור ריקם. והאורה האלהית, הקבועה בנפש הצדיק הדבק באור אלהי אמת, תנחה גם היא את חפצי לבבו באותה הדרך המסויימת לחפץ העליון, אשר במאמרו וברוח פיו יעמדו כל עולמי עד.
ד. ע"כ, אין לשער כמה חזקות ומשורגות הנן הסבות החזקות והרבות העומדות הכן לקיים דבר צדיק יסוד עולם (משלי י, כה) הדבק באלהים חיים. וכיון דאמר רבי, ר"ח ב"ח יתיב בראש, לא סגי דלא מליך, בין מצד פעולת המאמר בעתיד, בין מצד הוכחת אמתתו מצד העבר וההוה. "ותגזר אומר ויקם לך" (איוב כב, כח), להבא, "ועל דרכיך נגה אור" [ההמשך, שם], שכבר היה.

ר' תנחומא פתח (איוב מא) "מי הקדימני ואשלם תחת כל השמים לי הוא", זה רווק הדר במדינה ונותן שכר סופרים ומשנים אמר הקב"ה עלי לשלם גמולו ושכרו וליתן לו בן זכר, א"ר ירמיה ב"ר אלעזר עתידה בת קול להיות מפוצצת בראש ההרים ואומר: כל מי שפעל עם אל יבוא ויטול שכרו הה"ד (במדבר כג) כעת יאמר ליעקב ולישראל [מה פעל א-ל]] וגו' רוה"ק =רוח הקודש= אומרת "מי הקדימני ואשלם" (איוב, שם) מי קלס לפני עד שלא נתתי לו נשמה מי מלל לשמי עד שלא נתתי לו בן זכר מי עשה לי מעקה עד שלא נתתי לו גג מי עשה לי מזוזה עד שלא נתתי לו בית מי עשה לי סוכה עד שלא נתתי לו מקום מי עשה לי לולב עד שלא נתתי לו דמים מי עשה לי ציצית עד שלא נתתי לו טלית מי הפריש לפני פאה עד שלא נתתי לו שדה מי הפריש לי תרומה עד שלא נתתי לו גורן מי הפריש לפני חלה עד שלא נתתי לו עיסה מי הפריש לפני קרבן עד שלא נתתי לו בהמה הה"ד שור או כשב או עז.

הוא [רבן גמליאל בן ר"י הנשיא] היה אומר עשה רצונו כרצונך כדי שיעשה רצונך כרצונו בטל רצונך מפני רצונו כדי שיבטל רצון אחרים מפני רצונך.

אמר אברהם [=הראב"ד]: כבר הופיעה רוח הקודש בבית מדרשנו מכמה שנים והעלינו שהוא [הדס שנקטם ראשו] פסול.
