One of the most difficult feelings in this war – and rightly so – is the sense of injustice. When we hear the news, we may find ourselves tearing out our hair in despair: How can the UN and human rights organizations be so hypocritical? How do supporters of the Oslo Accords and draft refuseniks continue to be interviewed in the studios instead of hiding ashamed in their homes? How, for God's sake, do the Kaplan burners dare suggest closing the pre-military preparatory school in Eli?

In the Torah reading "Acharei Mot" read this Shabbat, we learn about the mitzvah of covering the blood of the slaughtered animal with dirt. The commentators have already wondered about the commandment: if it is not good to slaughter an animal, then it should be forbidden by the Torah, and if it is not a problem, why should the blood be covered as if we are ashamed of it? The answer is that taking the life of a living creature is indeed an injustice, but until humanity rises to the moral level in which we will abstain from eating meat, we cover the blood to remind us of the injustice in this matter.

In other words, justice will indeed appear in the eternal realm– but not immediately (contrary to Bialik's words after the Kishinev pogroms: "And if there is justice, it will appear immediately!"). God is slowly moving His world forward. On the one hand, we should all develop a kind of composure in the face of the injustices of this world; and on the other hand, we should find ways to remember that this is not the ideal situation. For example, after having to catch up on the news, I try to listen to a Torah lesson; hearing those who concocted the Shalit deal preach morality to the national-religious public is a kind of "blood shedding" that requires a lot of Torah to cover it; but in the end, justice appears – in this world or the next; for the most part already in this world. Try and see.

Shabbat Shalom!
