מקור להנהגה זו אפשר למצוא בדברי המשנה בפרקי אבות (א ; יב): "הלל אומר: הוֶי מתלמידיו של אהרן, - אוהב שלום ורודף שלום, אוהב את הבריות ומקרבן לתורה". ובאבות דרבי נתן מסופר (יב ; ג): "כשהיה אהרן מהלך בדרך, פגע בו באדם רשע, ונתן לו [- אהרון לרשע] שלום. למחר בִקש אותו האיש לעבור עבירה; אמר: אוי לי, היאך אשא עיני אחר-כך ואראה את אהרן; בושתי הימנו שנתן לי שלום. נמצא אותו האיש מונע עצמו מן העבירה". הרשע ידע שלאהרן הכהן איכפת מאד מקיום מצוות, כי אהרן היה כולו קודש, כולו קדושה, כהן גדול העובד במשכן ד' ומקריב לפניו קורבנות בכל יום. בגדיו היו בגדי קודש, ציץ הקודש על מיצחו תמיד. ועל-כן היחס האוהב של אהרן עורר אותו לתשובה. איך ישא פניו אל אהרן והוא רשע עובר עבירה?!
ואולם לא כל אדם שיאהב את הבריות יעורר אותם לתשובה. אמנם נעים לבריות שאוהבים אותם, אבל למה זה יעורר בתשובה? הם עשויים לפרש את האהבה כפשוטה, שכנראה לא מפריע לו לאוהב מכך שהבריות עושות עבירות; שהוא לא חושב שזה כל-כך רע. אך אם אהרן הכהן, האיש הקדוש הזה, אוהב, והרי ידוע ומפורסם כמה איכפת לו מקיום תורה ומצוות, אם כן, איך אפשר להמשיך לעבור עבירות? הרי אם יוודע הדבר לאהרן, יהיה זה מאד לא נעים.
אולי אף יתירה מזאת: אהבתו של אהרן את כל הבריות, גם את הרשעים, עוררה את הרשעים להרגיש שיש בהם צד טוב, חיובי, שיש בהם כוחות טובים וגדולים. אהבתו של אהרן חיזקה אצל החוטאים את הבטחון בטוב שבהם, וזה נתן להם כח לשוב בתשובה. בזה ניתן להבין מדוע אמרה המשנה באבות: "הוֶי מתלמידיו של אהרן, - אוהב שלום ורודף שלום", ולא אמרה 'הווי אוהב שלום ורודף שלום', בלי להזכיר את אהרן. המשנה מורה: עליך להיות כדמותו של אהרן, מלא בקדושה בעצמך, ומתוך כך אוהב שלום ורודף שלום, אוהב את הבריות ומקרבן לתורה.
