Question
Does a hot water urn made of nurosta material need to be immersed in a mikveh, please ?
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for your question. There is much debate as to whether an electric metal urn needs tevilah (dipping in a kosher mikvah). There are those who hold that indeed it does need immersion – and one should then leave it out to dry for a few days so that the electrical wires can fully dry before using. (One should note that this sometimes causes the urn to malfunction – and even though many people have done this, and say it works, I do not want to take responsibility for your new urn). On the other hand, some opinions believe it does not need immersion. This is for a variety of reasons, amongst them, the fact that the urn is used when plugged into the power-point. This connection to the house means that the urn is connected to the ground, which would exempt it from needing immersion. Then there is a middle ground, that would advice you to “break” the urn, and then have a Jew repair it – thus exempting the urn from needing immersion, as it was “built” by a Jew. Some opinions hold that it is enough to replace the power plug at the end of the cord, as that would be considered as having been built anew. As you see, there are various opinions. Ideally, it would be best to use option 1 or 3. However, if you are unable, (or unwilling), to immerse it (as per the first opinion), or repair it (as per the last opinion), you may rely on the first opinion and use it without immersion. Blessings.
