Every year, I teach that we should have in mind while saying Hallel on Sukkot, to also have kavana to thank Hashem for the miraculous "turn-around" victory of the Yom Kippur War in 1973/תשל"ד, which took place during Sukkot. The Israeli TV series "Sha'at Ne'ila" revolved around how Israeli convicts, movie-stars, upper and lower class, religious and secular, Ashkenazi and Sefaradi, veterans and new olim all molded together to save Am Yisrael in our darkest time since the Shoa. Over 2,650 fell (yes, even more than in our present war), most in the first five days! Yesterday, I announced that we must also have in mind this year to thank Hashem for the uncountable victories of the past 3 years, as well as THIS YEAR'S SUKKA (=G-dly protection) & miraculous end of the unsuccessful FlyDubai hijacking. Seconds separated between survival & extreme tragedy, and what could very easily have changed our mood and ruined Zman Simchatenu. Rav Kook writes (Ein Aya, Brachot ch. 9), that G-d runs His world on many levels, including various ALMOST deaths. Like a dream or sickness, any time we are "faced with death", even if it was just a fleeting dream, it's meant to wake us from our slumber & appreciate. Hallel, praising him "על חסדך ועל אמיתך", "for His kindness & TRUTHS" (=G-d doesn't need our kavod, but admiring His kindness & salvations, strengthen our resolve to follow His Torah truths and ideals, Imitateo Dei, צלם אלהים). As we say in Hallel, לא אמות כי אחיה ואספר מעשי י-ה. יסור יסרני י-ה ולמוות לא נתנני", "I shall not die but I shall live and tell the deeds of God. He sent me challenges, but did not deliver me to death". The Dubna Maggid asks on Hallel: ""הללו את ה' כל גוים.. כי גבר עלינו חסדו, "Let all the nations Praise G-d… for His abundant kindness to us": why should THEY thank Him for His kindness to Israel?! He answers with a mashal of a gentile who elaborately planned to kill a Jew, but was foiled, even without the Jew's knowing that he was endangered. The terrorist co-pilot in jail in Saudi Arabia, knows better than we do, what he had planned! So even if by chance, the NY Times writes that it wasn't a terrorist hijacking but simply an "altercation" between co-pilots over perhaps a girlfriend (while yelling "Allahu Achbar"!), or Trump's suggestion that the stabber who wanted to kill 174 Jews was just "Wacko" (as are all suicidal terrorists, problem is that in the Middle-East that's the norm!), the fact that it could have been a hijacking and could have been a Jewish calamity is what we thank Hashem for. The bottom line is that He prevented whatever could have been. We must especially thank Him for training us to be brave Israelis (emulating His truths) who, disproportionately to any other flight in the world, have the guts and pro-activeness to make colossal life-saving decisions within seconds, under the ultimate pressure, and extreme lack of balance. This is perhaps the true pshat in today's Hoshanot, "Ani vaHu Hoshia Na", "I and Him, Save Us". We don't just pray to Him, but we also pray to and for ourselves that we should emulate and educate our children to have that instinctive altruism with which He created the world. President Trump seemed amused about Yaniv Hayon, our PLUMBER who confidently worked with G-d like Superman (he learned from a pilot on a TV show!) to save 174 lives, but we in Israel are totally accustomed already 78 years to our plumbers, teachers, garbage-men, rabbis, farmers & doctors being Hashem's shlichim (you must see the song on YouTube: גיבורי על, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjCVg_aYfp8&list=RDEjCVg_aYfp8&start_radio=1), meriting to be G-dly in a way that the Chafetz Chaim and Rambam didn't have such opportunities! I'm not criticizing but truly feel sorry for anyone who didn't serve in the IDF, and didn't develop, or at least encourage his children to develop, his Godly selfless potential to become instinctive, even stronger and overcoming that strongest of natural instincts to freeze, shriek or flee to "save your own self". Yes, many jokes, cartoons and clips are flying around social media (joking to relieve pressure is also a healthy G-dly nature) about the 4 Israeli heroes who acted like David HaMelech with Hashem, but that is the ultimate DREAM of ANY FATHER: for His children to be like Himself, as well as to be independent, self-confident, self-aware, self-sufficient and above all, idealistic and altruistic as the 13 Traits of Himself. Rather than freezing or even shrieking "Shma Yisrael", BezH Godly brothers like this can insure our having a Pitka Tava, a successful year, especially when "the chips are down". Ani vaHu Hoshiah Na! Rav Ari Shvat (Chwat)
