Rabbi Stewart Weiss

Tamuz 1 5775
Our Sedra deals with the infamous rebellion of Korach, Datan, Aviram & various other malcontents against the leadership of Korach’s illustrious cousins Moshe & Aharon.

Korach contends that Moshe & Aharon have grabbed too much glory & power for themselves & insist that the leadership must be shared. When attempts to convince the rebels fail, Moshe sets up a test: Aharon & the rebels are both to offer ketoret (incense) to Hashem;
those who are in the right will have their offering accepted, the others will die an unusual death.

Hashem then causes the earth to open, swallowing Korach, while the other rebels are consumed by a flame. Among the rebels, only Ohn is saved (by his wife, of course!). Moshe then prevents a plague from breaking out among the general populace, many of whom sympathized with Korach.

Aharon’s staff then miraculously blooms into almond blossoms, & his role as Kohen Gadol is reaffirmed before the nation. The Torah then details the various gifts to be given to the Kohanim, & the obligation of the nation to support the Levi’im with Ma’aser, a gift comprising one-tenth of the crops of the Land.
