Parasha Summary - Beshalach

Rabbi Stewart Weiss

Paro finally sends Bnei Yisrael out of Egypt. They march towards Israel with pillars of clouds and fire. Paro regrets his decision and chases the Jews. The Jews are afraid, but G-d protects them by splitting the sea as they cross safely. When Paro commands his army to
pursue, the waters crash down on them. Moshe and Miriam lead the people in a song of praise to G-d.

After traveling 3 days only to find bitter waters at Mara, the people complain. Moshe miraculously produces water for them, and they receive certain mitzvot. The people complain about the food, so Hashem sends quails and Mahn that falls from the heavens every day except Shabbat. A double portion descends on Friday. When the Jews complain about a lack of water, Moshe miraculously produces water
from a rock.

Amalek attacks the Jews. Joshua leads the battle while Moshe prays; Amalek is defeated.
