Question
I just read your response about a Catholic family inquiring about the use of a mezuzah.
I recently saw online that now at the anniversary of 7 October, some people are putting mezuzahs at their doorways to show solidarity with the Jewish people. And it seems some film it and put it on social media.
I’m not sure when you wrote the initial response about the mezuzah question, but I’m wondering now in this new light what you might think of the idea of using it to show support for your people.
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. You ask about the phenomenon of more and more non-jews putting up mezzuzot on their doors as a sign of support of the Jewish people.
This is a fine example of how a person can have complex and mixed feelings a situation. Without a doubt it brings a sense of goodness and light to see how many non-jews support the Jewish people, are against antisemitism, love Israel, and are willing to openly show that support. How wonderful!
On the other hand, it still seems to me that putting up a mezuzah is not the ideal way to express that support – for all the reasons I have written about in the past.
So – when I see a person putting up a mezuzah as a sign of support for Israel, I feel very happy, and say “all the more strength to you” – a huge thank you. At the same time, if I was asked (as I have been many times on this website) is that the correct and ideal way to show support, I suggest looking at other ways – and leaving the command of the mezuzah to the Jewish people alone.
Many blessings.
