Question
I have been researching my Family Name of Munoz. I have found that it is part of the — Sephardic Conversos (Crypto-Jews). in Mexico in the region of Mexico—Le?n, Matamoros, Morelia (historically Valladolid), and Guanajuato. I have been raised Catholic and I find it bittersweet that the family name is part of this History.
Answer
Shalom, Thank you for writing to us. I completely understand and sympathize with your feelings. Imagine how many Jews have been lost because tragic antisemitism. In Judaism we believe in a concept called “Tshuvah” which translates to “Repentance” but has a much deeper and far-reaching meaning. It includes the ability of our present actions to in some ways rectify the past wrongs. I mention this as perhaps your research and feelings could lead you to some concrete actions of anti – antisemitism! If you have the opportunity to support the Jewish people, to stand up against those who try to hurt Israel, to spread more love and understanding of Judaism – then perhaps our shared history will be a cause for making the world a better place, and turn from bittersweet to pure sweetness. Many blessings.
