Question
Hello Rabbi/Rav, I was wondering if referring to G-d in a term such as The Almighty can be counted as saying His name in vain if used at the wrong time? Best
Answer
ב"ה Shalom All names of G-d are not His essence, but basically descriptors of G-d in the way we as humans perceive Him. Nonetheless , not all names of G-d, have the same status. The Talmud (Shavuot 35a) enumerates the names of G-d which at are a higher level of sanctity and therefore may not be crossed out or said in vain. This is what the Talmud says: " ..there are names of God that may not be erased due to their inherent sanctity. These are names that may not be erased: For example, several variations of the name God [Elohim]: El, Elohekha (with a second person singular suffix), Elohim, Eloheikhem (with a second person plural suffix)"Eheyeh( I Shall Be As I Shall Be), alef dalet, yod heh, Shaddai, Tzevaot, these names may not be erased." But then the Talmud enumerates descriptions of G-d which may be erased or said in vain, such as: the Mighty, the Awesome, merciful … Consequently, "Almighty", it seems, is in the second category of names which may be mentioned in vain. All the best
