Question
Dear Rabbi I am not sure how many times, and where, I have to bow down in Amida prayer. I have found different practices. I am Sephardic and would love to know how to pray according to halacha in a proper manner. I really appreciate it.
Answer
ב"ה Shalom, According to the Shulchan Aruch 113:1, one bows down ONLY at four places during the Amida. There is no difference between Sefardim and Askenazim in in regard to the places and number of times one bows. 1. The very beginning of the Amida, one bows when saying "Barukh Ata". 2. When saying "Barukh Ata" of the Bracha of "Magen Avraham." 3. Towards the end of the Amida , when saying "Modim anachnu lach…" 4. When saying "Barukh Ata" of the Bracha of "Htov Shincha ulecha Na'eh lehodot. (I am not getting into the bowing before stepping back at the conclusion of the Amida) For the bowing of Modim, according to the Kaf Hachaim 113:21, the bowing is done in two stages, first bowing the body by bending the knees and then bringing the head forward as in the places. The Ashkenazim, bow during Modim differentl, by one now of the head without the bending of the knees. (See Also Yalkut Yoseph 113: 10, note 10.
