Ask the Rabbi
Question
Is it allowed to wear clothes that contain wool from sheep, that could possibly have undergone a mulesing procedure? As a customer it is hard to know, where the wool comes from…
Answer
The painful mulesing procedure is obviously prohibited by Judaism and if it's possible to verify, one should surely not buy such wool. I understand that Australia was especially known for this immoral mutilation process so unless (hopefully) proven otherwise, one shouldn't buy such wool unless supervised. Although apparently most apparel wool is from Australia, I found on the web that some companies including K-Mart go out of their way not to buy such wool and such companies should surely be commended and supported by Jews for their morality and idealism.
