Question
Dear Rabbi,
Can you please explain to me when to say Birkat Hatorah? I am very confused.
Lets say someone gets up at Dawn and say Birkat Hatorah study throughout the day,
Then they go to sleep from 7 pm to a little before Chatzot, in current timing 12:30 am.
Case 1) If they want to study after Chatzot(12:45 am) for couple of hours, then go to sleep(3 am) and get up at Dawn, do they make the blessing?
Case2) What if they stay up after Chatzot and study till Dawn?
I really appreciate it if you can answer my question ASAP. Thank you so much.
(The timing referred in this text are base on current Pacific Time Zone)
Answer
Thank you for your question,
Case 1) Say Birkat Hatorah when you wake up after Chatzot (12:45 am). When you wake up in the morning say it again.
Case 2) Say Birkat Hatorah when they wake up and do notsay it again in the morning.
Sources: Mishna brura 47; 28, see also Halichoot shlomo page 73 that if someone wakes up in the night and will return to sleep an hour later he should say only when he finishes his second and main sleep. In your case that you will be awake for a few hours you have two main sleep times. In this case the Halichot Shlomo would agree that you should say the Bracha twice.
All the best!
