Question
Shalom, I was curious about the laws of shechita. Im in a place where kosher meat is hard to find and very expensive more than usual. I am wondering if I can take some courses on shechita, for my own consumption, at the time I am not shomer shabbat so that would disqualify me from being a shochet, but am I still able to shect for my own consumption? Are there classes geared not so much towards ordination but geared towards knowing the hilchot and practices?
Answer
ב"ה Shalom, First my apologies for the delay in my answer. I was in the process of moving. Firstly, I do think that ordering kosher meat, although more expensive would be the simpler method. You may try to make your order of kosher meat as part of the order of the closest Jewish community this way possibly making it less expensive. It is clear from the fact that you want to eat Kosher, that you haven't forsaken G-d and that you want to keep the Halachot that you are able to at this time. There are precedents in the not so distant past in which the slaughter of those who did not keep Shabbat was considered to be kosher due to the existing circumstances. (See שו"ת מים חיים חלק א סי' קמ"ג , ילקוט יוסף איסור והיתר כרך א' עמוד לד) Practically, learning Shechita is something that also requires practical skills and apprenticeship not just the theoretical side. So, besides the study of the laws you would need a personal trainer. Therefore, to learn shechita is more than an online course. In addition , the knife must be inspected to be without any imperfections on the blade. Furthermore, realistically, I would suggest only to study the slaughter of poultry which is a lot less complicated. The slaughtering of a large Kosher animal such as a cow, requires a lot more skills than just the Shechita. I wish you success in your endeavors to eat kosher. All the best
