Question
Hi! I work at a supermarket bakery with a large jewish customer base but am not myself jewish. I have been trying to learn the rules and such for keeping kosher and wanted to ask a clarifying question so i can better answer my customers when they inquire about our kosher status for our products. We have some items that are baked in store, and others that are shipped in already baked and we prepare by frosting and adding garnish. For example, I know our breads are not considered kosher because they are baked in a non kosher oven. However, our cupcakes, buttercream, and sprinkles are all shipped in made and prepackaged individually and we simply assemble the cupcakes by frosting and adding sprinkles. all of the items, in their original packaging, have kosher certification from The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (they all have the U in a circle somewhere on their label) but are taken out of their packages to be assembled into one item in a new package. Would these cupcakes be considered kosher items?
Answer
Shalom , Hello from Israel, It is nice to see that you want to accommodate for your Jewish customer base. The best thing would be to contact the local Rabbinic Council which oversees the issue of Kosher certificates to different food establishments. It would most likely involve some fee, but if all your items are found kosher or may be changed for kosher produced alternatives would enlarge your clientele for people who seek Kosher food items. Until then, if you want those seeking Kosher to buy your cupcakes, they should be kept in their original package, because people will be looking for the OU symbol on the original packing. Good luck
