Question
I have a question about Beshesheet 35:26 it says:
The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant: Gad and Asher. These are Jacob’s sons who were born to him in Padan aram.
Why does it say Padan Aram if Benjamin was born in Israel, which is the secret of this name, he was the only one who was born in Israel.
Thank you, have a good day.
Answer
Ibn Ezra says that the verse refers to the majority of sons, who were born in Padan Aram. The Hizkuni adds another explanation, that Binyamin was born through the efficacy of the prayer which Rachel prayed in Padan Aram so it is as if he were conceived and born there.
