2. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת ב, פא על מסכת שבת כח ע"ב
1. הקרנים המה כלי המלחמה. המלחמה היא אמנם לצורך הקיום הפרטי והמיני. והנה ישנם מתנגדים צדדיים וישנם מתנגדים מכוונים. המתנגדים הצדדיים, היינו שהם אינם באים לאבד ולהחריב את מי שהמלחמה מזדמנת לו, אבל מפני שממהלך אותו המתנגד תצמח הריסה ורעה לאותו המגין על ערכו וקיומו, מצטרך הוא לצאת למלחמה. הקרנים שהן מן הצד מורות על המלחמה ג"כ נגד מתנגדים צדדיים, כלומר אותם שרק את טובתם ידרשו והרעה ממילא באה לבעל הקרנים, והוא מנגח מצדדיו לימין ולשמאל למען ינצל מהרעה הצדדית.
2. אמנם אם היתה ההגנה דרושה רק לאויב הבא ומתכוין רק להתקומם ישר נגדו, מורה יותר מקומה קרן אחת ובמצחו מכוון פנים כנגד פני הרודף. אחדות הקרן מורה כי המטרה של המלחמה הצדדית, היא מתחלקת לפי נטיות המוכפלות של הצדדים השונים. אבל הנטיה של ההגנה נגד אותו האויב שאין לו שום נטיה אחרת כ"א ההתנגדות נגד אותו העצם שלו יאתה הקרן להגנה, מותאמת יותר קרן אחת, ובמצחו מכוון נגד המתכוין לעומתו להתקומם לו.
ג. והנה באשר המובן העולה מריבוי הגוונים שבתחש המקיף את המשכן מלמעלה, היא ההכרה של ההתאחדות שתבא בסוף מכל הנטיות השונות ביותר, ואיך שיתקבצו כולן למרכז הטוב הכללי, שכינת ד' וכבודו, ושמו הגדול ד' שלום; ע"כ ראוי להבליט כי אמנם הרבה דברים ישנם בעולם שכפי מהלכם הם נוטים מאותו הדרך ששֹמוּ ישראל להם לקו ע"פ ד', וכל מה שמתגברת בעולם נטיה זרה לכאורה נראה שהיא מתנגדת ולוחמת, עד שהקרניים של החוזק העצמי לפום ריהטא ראויות שישתמשו בהן לנגח אלה האויבים הצדדיים, אבל עם ההבנה שכ"כ גדול ונשגב הוא הכח הכללי, הוד אחדות שם ד' והחפץ הנאדר בקודש המאחד את הכללים כולם למקום אחד, כשאנו עומדים על מצב של מבט בהיר כזה, אנו מכירים שכל השימוש במלחמת הקיום, בין בחומריות בין ברוחניות, ראוי לנו להעמיד רק נגד אלה ההולכים ישר לאבד ולהחריב, לעקור את כח החיים האמיתיים במתכוין ויד רמה, נגדם מכוונת המלחמה האמיתית, מלחמת מצוה.
ד. אבל על הדברים שהם זורמים רק מנטיות צדדיות, אף שאינם כפי תביעותינו ודרכינו, מ"מ אל תהי בז לכל אדם ולכל דבר, שהכל באשר לכל מד' נברא והוכן לתכלית הטוב, ואין לך דבר שאין לו שעה ומקום (אבות ד, ג). ע"כ רק קרן אחת היתה לו להיות למגן מהאויב, שרק מטרת האיבוד של הטוב הכללי הצפון בשרשן של ישראל הוא נגד עיניו, ובמצחו מכוון נגד המתיצב לעומת פניו ושאיפתו הקדושה האלהית.
