סנדל המסומר מאי טעמא? אמר שמואל: שלפי הגזרה [השמד] היו, והיו נחבאין במערה, ואמרו: הנכנס - יכנס, והיוצא - אל יצא. נהפך סנדלו של אחד מהן, כסבורין הם: אחד מהן יצא, וראוהו אויבים, ועכשיו באין עליהן, דחקו זה בזה והרגו זה את זה יותר ממה שהרגו בהן אויבים.

אמר שמואל, שלפי השמד היו, והיו נחבאים במערה, ואמרו: הנכנס יכנס והיוצא אל יצא. מקור הנפילה הוא התמוטטות הרוח, עזיבת השכל וההשתקעות הדמיונית, "זנח ישראל טוב אויב ירדפו" (הושע ח, ג). הדמיון משקיע את האדם ואת האומה בחורו, בתוך חומריותו הגסה ונטיותיו המכוערות והשפלות. ההשגה החיצונית אינה מכרעת בקרבו, "את פועל ד' לא יביטו ומעשה ידיו לא ראו" (ישעיה ה, יב). הרשמים החיצוניים פועלים את פעולתם ע"פ הזרחתם הטבעית, ואינם יוצאים להיות נדונים בהשבת הלב, להאיר את השכל ואת המדות. התולדות היוצאות מזה הנן דומות לו במדתן, שפלות הנפש, פחד אויב, החבאה במערה, החלטה שפלה מרב ירידה, מפחד אויב ומתנקם, הנכנס יכנס והיוצא אל יצא.
3. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת ו, ט על מסכת שבת דף ס ע"א
נהפכה סנדלו של אחד מהם, כסבורים הם אחד מהם יצא וראוהו אויבים ועכשיו באים עליהם. הדמיון, הגורם מראשיתו לעזוב את ד', להזניח כל ארחות יושר, בעצמו נעשה שבט המוסר. הוא מעמיק את הרגשת הרע, הוא מרבה את החולשה הנפשית עד קצה האחרון. בשינוי כל שהוא מהרגלו כבר העולם נהפך עבורו. לא כמדת השכל, היודע עת לכל חפץ (קהלת ג, א). ואם יתחדשו מושגים ותנאים חדשים בכל הליכות החיים החומריים והרוחניים, תעז ידו להנהיג את ארחות צדקו כראוי. לא כן הדמיון, רוח קמעא עוכרתו, מרעיון בלתי בהיר אחד כמה תוצאות מרות וקשות נכונות הנן. נהפך סנדלו של אחד מהם, מיד ההחלטה המפחידה והמיואשת באה, שראוהו אויבים והם באים עליהם.
4. הרי"מ חרל"פ, טובים מאורות, עמ' 6- 8- היו לנו ימים אשר כל יסוד הדרכת העבודה היה מכוון... רק אל הכנעת הרע והדכאתו... ונעזרו הרבה ברבוי הנזירות וההרחקה מסערת החיים... אבל... זה היה בתור הוראת שעה... בגלות ובחו"ל, מקום טומאת אוירה וגושה של ארץ העמים לפני התגלותו של התחלת קץ המגולה שהיא נהירת ישראל לארץ ישראל לשם גאולה ובנין... אבל לא כן עתה שהננו שבים לארץ חמדתינו לשם תקומת גאולה, לנחלה זו שחיי נשמות אויר ארצה ובכל נשימה... מריחים את ריח הקודש... משדה אשר ברכו ד'... אי אפשר להסתפק עוד בדרכי כבישה והכנעת הרע לבד, כי אם דוקא להכשיר את עצמנו גם לידי ההדרכה העליונה המביאה לידי ביטולו של הרע ואפסיותו... ע"י ההכרה הבהירה שאין למו [לרע] כל מציאות... שבכל מגמה לגלות חפץ הקדושה לכלה ולהתם בזה את כל הצללים, למלא מקומם באור הבהיר.
