Our sedra states Hashem’s command (20:17): "You shall utterly destroy (the 7 nations) of the Hittites, the Emori, the Prizi, the Chivi, the Y’vusi, the Canaani (and the Girgashi). But Yehoshua did not succeed in driving them out of Israel. Indeed, in the time of Shlomo HaMelech, it seems that the attempt was abandoned. What happened? Chazal offer a number of opinions: Bnei Yisrael did not have the spiritual merit to conquer the entire land, due to their sins; fighting against the Canaanim (a generic term including all of these nations) constituted an ongoing crisis that necessitated national service & this would actually help to bind the nation together (as the IDF does today); having an enemy close by would be a constant prod to the nation to pray & perform Mitzvot so as to remain safe; and the Canaanim provided manual labor, which benefitted the Jewish People, & so they were spared. This is the reality throughout the generations, but not necessarily in the Messianic Age.
