1. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת ה, ל, על מסכת שבת דף נה
ומאי שנא תיו, א"ר תיו תחיה, תיו תמות.
א. הפרטים שמכולם יתקבץ הכלל, הם בנפש האדם לעולם מחולקים בין הטוב והרע. ההבדל שבין צדיק לרשע לא יוכל להיות בנוי על ציון של פרטים, לפעמים יעשה רשע ג"כ דבר טוב וצדיק יכשל בחטא ועון, ואם נאמר להכריע את המשקל ע"פ הכמות, הלא נדע את הערך של חטא ושל זכות.
ב. אמנם העיקר היסודי בהכרעת האדם, אם הוא מועיל בקיומו ויש לו זכות חיים, או הוא מפסיד בהוייתו ואבד זכותו, הוא רק החשבון הכללי העולה מצירוף כל כחותיו יחדיו. אם המסקנא האחרונה של סכום כל נטיותיו (הנם) [היא] לצד הטוב הצדק והיושר, אז הוא ראוי לקיום, ואם הוא לצד הרשעה אז הוא ראוי לכליון.
ג. הציון של האות האחרון שבאותיות הוא מכריע את כל הבנין, ותכנית הערך של המסקנא מדוייק הוא בזה, שהמעמד של ההכרעה איננו עושה שום דבר חדש, רק הוא מקבץ את כל המפוזר בחיי האדם ומציגם בחוברת. כאשר הנם כולם עצם אחד, אז אם המקובץ מהם הוא דבר שראוי לחיים, הנטיה מסמנת את הכרעת החיים בפועל, ואם הוא ראוי למיתה, הנטיה הזאת היא מסמנת את היציאה לפועל, נמצא שלא עשתה הנטיה דבר כ"א שהוסיפה פעל על המוכן בשרשו משכבר.
ד. אם המסקנא של הסכום של כל הפעולות והרגשות שבנפש פונים לחיים, אז התי"ו מצטרפת לחיה, והתי"ו היא תיו תחיה, ובאופן ההיפוך, מצטרפת למות, והיא תיו תמות. כי לא במעמד שהוא כעין מצרף לאדם, עת צרה וזעם, שאז הפורענות כבר מתחוללת בעולם, לא אז יוכל האדם להתחיל בהכנת ערכו, כ"א היסוד הוא מה שהכין בימי המנוחה, בסדרי חייו התמידים, והמעמד הרועש מוציא רק אל הפועל את מה שהוכן מראש, ואין ערכו כ"א ערך האות השימושית לעיקר הפעל.
2. רמב"ם הלכות תשובה פרק ג
אדם שעונותיו מרובין על זכיותיו מיד הוא מת ברשעו שנאמר על רוב עונך, וכן מדינה שעונותיה מרובין מיד היא אובדת שנאמר זעקת סדום ועמורה כי רבה וגו', וכן כל העולם כולו אם היו עונותיהם מרובין מזכיותיהן מיד הן נשחתין שנאמר וירא ה' כי רבה רעת האדם, ושקול זה אינו לפי מנין הזכיות והעונות אלא לפי גודלם, יש זכות שהיא כנגד כמה עונות שנאמר יען נמצא בו דבר טוב, ויש עון שהוא כנגד כמה זכיות שנאמר וחוטא אחד יאבד טובה הרבה, ואין שוקלין אלא בדעתו של אל דעות והוא היודע היאך עורכין הזכיות כנגד העונות.
