1. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת ה, כט, על מסכת שבת דף נה ע"א
ומיד "והנה ששה אנשים באים מדרך שער העליון אשר מפנה צפונה, ואיש כלי מפצו בידו..." (יחז' ט) ומאן נינהו ששה אנשים? א"ר חסדא, קצף אף וחימה ומשחית ומשבר ומכלה.
א. השלמות הגמורה, אור הטוב היושר שהמשפט האלהי הוא מכונו, וסדרי ההנהגה הכוללת בעולם הנם מכוונים לו, בה נמצא המובן היותר נערץ לחפץ הגועל את הקלקלה והרשעה, מצד שהוא ההיפוך הגמור מהטוב והיושר.
ב. הקצף איננו מבקש טעמים, הוא מתגלה בתור גילוי נפשי עצמי ואינו צריך טעמים לקצפו. היפך הטוב אין ראוי להיות, וכל מה שהוא יותר רע, יותר עול ורשע, ראוי יותר למאיסה לאיבוד וכליון. זה הוא הניגוד הפנימי האצור בסדרי ההנהגה העליונה לרשעה וחטאת. מזה הננו מכירים שיצאו פעולות המובילות את המטרה לכלות הפשע.
ג. האף, היוצא אל הפועל במסיבותיו הזרוּעות בכל ארחות המציאות והחיים, הוא מכוון לעומת הרשע כשהוא בא עד מרום עזו, שכבר אין ממנו תקוה לעולם, לאושר ותועלת.
ד. כשיצא הפעל המעשי לאורה, אז הדברים כבר פוגעים לא רק בתחום הרשע הנקי, כי א"א כ"א שיהיו חלקי אורה וטובה נסמכים ונארגים במסכת הרשע, וכיון שהרשעה צריכה שתאבד, אז החימה גוברת לאבד גם את הטוב הנשען על הגורל של הרשעים, במקום שחזָקה ועצ[ו]מה ההתאחדות וההתיחסות עד לעצמיות של מציאותם, שהאחד נופל ונובל באיבוד חבירו.
ה. אלה המה התכונות האידיאליות לביעור הרעה. אמנם יֵצאו לפועל המעשי במציאות, מצד העומק של שנאת הרשעה בכל מקום, שהיא מצד עצמה היא צריכה להשחת. רק ההשחתה של הכיעור והניוול תביא מרפא לעולם, שיוכל לחיות ולהתעודד באור חיים של אמת. ההשחתה היא מכוונת אל הרשעה מצד עצמה, בכל מקום שהיא, כחק הקצף.
ו. למעשה, הנה החלקים שאפשר להפרידם, להציל את מה שאפשר, ולהשחית את הטעון השחתה, כמדת האף העושה מלאכתו במהלך המעשים בפועל, הוא משבר הבנין. הכלי בכללו הוא פגום ולקוי, כעור ומגועל, בשלימותו הוא שנאוי ומקציף, בהשברו אמנם יוצלו חלקי הטובה, יצטרפו לטוב ויתעלו.
ז. אמנם מה שהוא דבק ואדוק באין ציור של עמידה לעצמו, כ"א בארג של הרעה, בין בחיים, בין בחברה, בין בעם, בין בכל צד ואופן, זה הוא תפקידה של כוס החימה, "חמה אין לי, מי יתנני שמיר שית במלחמה אפשעה בה אציתנה יחד" (ישעיה כז, ד), מכלה כליון חרוץ הטוב הנגרר עם הרע. גם הטוב, שבשביל ההירוס הנורא אין לו שום מקום ופעולה, ויוכרח להיות נהפך לרועץ ורע, כ"ז הוא מכלה.
ח. אין התכונות אמנם סותרות אחת את חברתה, כולן הן מלאות אישיות גמורה במלא מובן ומלא שלמות, ובמילואן מצטרפות הן לתמֵם ביותר את הסתירה שלצורך הבנין.
