Question
Hi,
In Targum Jonathan to Isaiah 11:1 we read:
“And a king shall come forth from the sons of Jesse, and from his children’s children the Messiah shall be anointed.”
Who exactly is the first king that the Targum refers to?
Thanks,

I think the correct translation of the Targum is "and the Messiah from his children's children shall flourish"
Some commentators say that it refers to King Chizkiyahu, while others see it referring to the future Mashiach who descends from Chizkiya.
See Redak and Ibn Ezra to Yeshayahu 11:1 , and Mesech Chochma to Vayikra 27:33, and Yerushalmi Berachot 2:4. )
