Question
Dear Rabbi, Am wanting to observe Shabbat. Problem is that I work 6 days a week and Saturday is the only day I can take my young son on a trip etc. If I give up this, he will be spending the whole week indoors or at nearby park which would be cruel for his upbringing. What to do? Thanks.
Answer
In Israel many, maybe most, work 6 days a week, and what obviously God wants us to do is to spend quality time with our children within the beautiful framework of Shabbat. The non-use of smartphones, TV or internet actually enables us to get to know and enjoy each other better as people, and can include taking walks, playing games (especially board games), telling stories or reading together, having idealistic and Torah discussions and obviously eat great meals, sing and pray together. You can also travel before Shabbat and spend Shabbat together at interesting places. In short, it takes a little planning ahead, but it's definitely worth investing that time in order to raise your inter-personal relationship to a higher, independent and unconditional level. Going on other trips can be done during holidays, summers, etc.
