Question
Hi, I am an Askenazi and don’t eat legumes on Passover. is quinoa considered legumes? thanks
Answer
The issue of quinoa is in dispute among many Rabbis and among major Kashrut agencies , if it is considered legumes or not . Even on the Hebrew counterpart of this site, you will find on the one hand the opinion of Rav Dov Lior, who holds it is permissible for an Askenazi to eat quinoa on Pessach, since it was not included in the original prohibition. On the other hand, Rav Yakov Ariel , is stringent and says you may not eat it since it comes under the definition of legumes. Therefore, you must choose your Rav and follow his decision. If you decide to follow the lenient opinion, you should be aware that there are prominent Rabbis to rely upon. However, if you are to invite guests who may be more stringent you should inform them that you are serving quinoa. Chag Same'ach
