שער העשרים - שער השכחה
השכחה היא מידה רעה מאוד
בענייני העולם הזה ובענייני העולם הבא, ומי שהוא שכחן, יכתוב כל עניינים שיש בינו ובין חברו כדי שיזכור. אם הוא לוה ומלוה, יכתוב הכל; אפילו אם לוה פרוטה מחברו, יכתוב הכל ויתן לב שלא ישכח. וראוי לאדם שהוא נכבד ושכחן שלא יהא לוה מבני-אדם, כי הם מתביישים לשאול ממנו, והוא שוכח ולא יפרע ונשא עונו. ומי שיודע בעצמו שהוא שכחן, יזהר מאוד לחזור ענייניו.
משל: כמו שעשה מלך אחד, שנתן לאחד מעבדיו המשרתים כתב, ואמר לו: כשתראה שאני כועס, תנהו לי. והיה בכתב כתוב בזה הלשון: דע, כי אינך אלוהים, אלא אתה גוף כלה, שיאכל קצתו את קצתו, וישוב בקרבו לרימה ותולעה.
והיה למלך עבד אחד, שצווה שיעמוד לפניו בעת שיצווה להכות בני-אדם בשוטים של אש, והיה אומר לו כך להכניע את לבו.
מזה ילמד כמה דברים. אדם שהוא שוכח, יעשה לו זיכרונות. וצריך גדרים גדולים שלא ישכח את התורה, כדכתיב: "רק השמר לך ושמר נפשך מאוד פן תשכח את הדברים אשר ראו עיניך" (דברים ד, ט). וצריך ליזהר שלא ישכח מידות הטובות.
אך ישתמש במידת השכחה לשכוח המצוות שעשה
כי אם יתן לב לזכור מצוותיו ותורותיו, וישכח רעותיו ותחבולותיו, אז יהיה צדיק בעיניו ולא ישוב. אך יזכור פשעיו, ויכתבם על ספר ויקראם כדי שיזכור הכל, וישוב מכל אחת ויתוודה עליהם. אך על מצווה שעשה לא יחוש לזכור. לעולם ידמה בעיניו כאלו הוא ריק ממצוות ומלא עבירות. וישכח חטאת חברו וימחל לו, וישכח מלבו שנאה וקנאה והרהורים רעים. ובעת התפילה ישכח מלבו כל דבר שבעולם, אך יעלה במחשבתו חסד השם יתברך, וידבק בו בדבקות גדולה. וכשהוא עושה צרכיו ישכח מלבו כל דברי-תורה ודברי קדושה, אך יחשוב בצרכי ביתו באותה שעה, ויחשוב שהוא מלא צואה, ובזה ישפיל לבו.
כללו של דבר: לכל מצווה ומצווה יעשה מה, שלא ישכחנה, כי נר מצווה ותורה אור. (משלי ו, כג).
