On the 28th of Iyar in 1967 Jewish forces courageously freed Jerusalem, after 19 years of Jordanian occupation, during which the Jordanians had expelled all Jews in the quarter, burned down the shuls of the Old City & desecrated our cemeteries. The IDF liberated our holy places, including the Kotel & Har HaBayit, & reunified our eternal capital. The Chief Rabbinate declared this day to be a festive occasion on which special Tehilim & Hallel (with a bracha) should be joyously recited in order to give praise & thanks to Hashem, whose Hand was clearly evident in this great miracle. There are those who find even more religious significance in this day than Yom Ha’atzmaut, as that event was declared in advance by the United Nations, while Yom Yerushalayim emerged purely min hashamayim as a result of a war & the fortuitous (for us!) decision of the Jordanians to enter at a late stage into the conflict, despite our appeal to them to stay out of the fighting.
