The Torah introduces the dietary restrictions with the words: "Zot hachaya asher tochlu", "These are the animals that you may eat" (Lev. 11:2). However the term "chaya" here seems difficult since the verse continues "mekol habeheima asher al haaretz". Therefore Rashi explains (see Gur Aryeh) that the name "chaya" is being used here specifically to associate kashrut with the greater concept of chaim. "Since Bnei Yisroel are so closely connected to Hashem and are worthy of chaim, therefore I have separated them from tumah, and commanded them to do mitzvot, and to the nations of the world I have not commanded anything." Our separation from the world through the means of kashrut brings us to "chaim", an expression of the fullest, deepest, most complete living possible.

Eretz Yisroel is given the title "eretz ha-chaim" (Psalms 142:6). Here too Am Yisroel seemingly withdraws from the company of the nations of the world. But in reality it is precisely our step back that enables us to take the greatest step forward towards real chaim, the true life of Yisrael, and fulfill our destiny of being an "ohr lagoyim". (See Rav Kook, Orot p. 153)

Quality Over Quantity- Countless Ramifications

As mankind matures (similar to the individual child), we all realize that it's generally a mistake to go after quantity, at the expense of quality. Children and primitve man thought that "bigger is better", but today's tiny computer chips and laser warfare teach man what Judaism always knew. Rav Kook explains this important idea with so many ramifications in life and Torah, via the letter Yud, which is the smallest letter, and rationally explains its Kabbalistic meanings and usage. WHAT CONVINCED YITRO MAY SWAY THE ANTI-ISRAEL TOO

We find that Yitro was convinced to follow the G-d of Israel for "Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the deities, for (precisely) with the thing that they plotted, [G-d brought] upon them(selves) (18, 11)." Rashi explains that the Egyptians drowned the boys of Israel, so in the end, G-d drowned their men as well. Why was this "Midah k'negged mida" (literally: "a measure for a measure)- so convincing for Yitro, even convincing him to actually change his life & join Israel? Similarly, this can help us understand why this theme of "V'Nahafoch hu…" (literally: "it was reversed", that the Megila flips everything Haman planned to do Israel, 180 degrees and brings upon Haman himself is so central also to Megilat Esther & the forthcoming holiday of Purim? We are not just speaking of irony, but of justice.
