Question
Hi, is it okay for an ultra-orthodox girl to go to a mixed law school?
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. There are really two parts to the answer. 1) on a technical level, it is possible, according to most opinions, to attend a mixed school. Just as we take mixed transportation, sit in mixed waiting rooms etc, so too, one could imagine a way to take part in a mixed collage. Though many religious communities try to avoid any mixed contact, on a technical level, if it is undertaken in a professional and serious manner, in an environment of modesty, it would be allowed. Especially if the studies do not require living on campus.
2) From a social point of view – many communities in the religious world have community norms, that it are correct to follow. If one is from a community that does not go to mixed schools, it is generally correct to refrain from breaking those norms. However, even in such communities, there is often room for exceptions – and it often with the guidance of the leaders of such communities that such exceptions can be a great blessing for Am Yisrael.
Blessings.
