Question
Jonathan pollard recently said that his name is yonatan but his rabbi mordechai eliyahu said to add a hey to his name spelling it yehonatan What does the extra hey do. How does it change his merit. What’s the difference between yonatan and yehonatan. Thank you
Answer
ב"ה Shalom First , let myself be clear that I am not a spokesperson for Yehonatan Pollard, and for sure not for Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l. What I can speak about is the use of Yonatan and Yehonatan in the Tanach. The commentator ,Radak on Shmuel I 13: 2 and on Tehillim 81:6 seems to indicate that the names Yonatan and Yehonatan are used interchangeably without any particular reason. He also brings examples of the name Yoseph which is also written as Yehoseph and other examples. Rav Yisrael Isserline zt"l who was one of the great Rabbis in Germany in the 15th century wrote in his book Terumat Hadeshen (Answer 233) that after Yonatan had made his covenant with David , the letter "Heh" was added to his name and he was called Yehonatan from then on. (However, there are some exceptions to this rule). I can only presume that perhaps the reason that Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu zt"l suggested to Yonatan Pollard to make his name Yehonatan with the addition of the letter "Heh", because then his name would contain the letters "Yud" and "Heh" which make up one of G-d's names. Furthermore, Moshe had added a "Heh " to the name Hoshea ,and from then on Moshe's pupil is called "Yehoshua"= Joshua. This was to protect and save him from the sinful plans of the spies as explained in Rashi on the Torah based on the Midrash. ( Rashi Bamidbar 13:16 based on Midrash Aggada there. It is therefore possible, that Rav Eliyahu zt"l's intention was that similarly , Yehonatan should be protected and saved, which Baruch Hashem, is what eventually happened. All the best
