Punishment for idolatry
Question
Will christians be punished by G-d for idolatry?
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. Christianity is not one uniform belief, and there are many sects and sub-beliefs in it. Certain aspects of certain forms of Christianity would seem to be in violation of the laws of Idolatry that Judaism believes all peoples (even non Jews) are obligated to follow. As such, it would follow that they would be punished for this form of idolatry by G-d. However, the question is not a simple one – as subtle differences of believe and practice, intent and knowledge, are involved in determining the level of sin. Some forms of Christianity do not appear to be in violation of the laws of idolatry for non Jews.
For Jews, Christianity is certainly forbidden – as G-d requires Jews to keep a much higher level of obligation when it comes to the service of G-d.
Blessings.
