Called to the Torah
Question
Someone told me that the Minhag of Sefardim when called to the Torah is to call by the person’s name (Yakov) ben (mother’s name). Is that really the custom of Jews from the Arab countries ?
Answer
Harav Mordechai Eliyahu writes in his sefer on Kriyat Hatorah that there is such a custom in some places. He writes though that one should call a person to the Torah by his father's name or as most Sefaradim do by the name of the Aliya and not by his name at all.
