2. הראי"ה קוק, עין איה שבת ט, סט על מסכת שבת דף פח ע"א
אמר רבא, אעפ"כ הדור קבלוה בימי אחשורוש.
א. היסוד הטבעי שבקדושה שמפעם בחזקה בנשמתן של ישראל, אינו מניח את היסוד של הבחירה החפשית להתגלות בכל מילואה. ומאז עמדו רגלי אבותינו על הר סיני , אור[ות] החיים הטבעיים שבקדושה מתגברים והולכים בגלוי, והתוכן החפשי של בחירת האדם עומדת היא בצורה עלומה, עד אשר רק בהשתערות רוח עועים של שכרות נוראה, אשר ליצרא דע"ז ביסודו, היה אפשר לצאת אל הפועל מין תואר של בחירה בישראל. ומפני הארס הגדול שהוכרח להתכנס עד כדי העמדת הבחירה המעשית במשקל ישר, היה הצורך של יצרא דע"ז להיות מרובה כ"כ בעז כחו.
ב. הירידות הכלליות גרמו אח"כ החלשה רבה להארתה של טבעיות הקודש, ו בימי אחשור[ו] ש, אחרי שקדמו הנפילות המאוחרות של השתחויית הצלם וההתנאות מסעודתו של אותו רשע, כל אותם התוכנים הזרים שחדרו בישראל, גרמו האַפלה להאור של הקדושה הטבעית, גניזת אורה במחבואיה של הנשמה, מבלי להגלות בהופעת כחה.
ג. וזו גופא היתה עצת ד' עמוקה, כדי שתהיה אפשרות לכח הבחירה השקולה לצאת אל הפועל בפעולתה. וזה נעשה אח"כ לטובה אחרי התשובה שבאה ע"י גזירתו של המן, שהונח מקום לפעולה בחירית, הבאה מהכרעה חפשית שבנשמה, לפעול את פעולתה. וכאן נתקיים בפועל, בתור אישור וקיום, בהוצאה מן הכח אל הפועל בתוכן רצוני, ששייך בו קיום לקיים את המצווה מאז, אשר מני אז היה בתכונה של קבלה עצמית, חטיבה של מהותיות קבועה, שאין בה מילוי היסוד של חופש בחירי, וכעת קיימו מה שקבלו כבר.
3. סנהדרין סד ע"א- אמר רב יהודה אמר רב: יודעין היו ישראל בעבודה זרה שאין בה ממש, ולא עבדו עבודה זרה אלא להתיר להם עריות בפרהסיא.

ועל זה הדרך יתפרש מה שנמצא בכתוב שהשם יתברך מחזק לב הרשעים או מקשה ערפם ומונע מהם דרכי התשובה, וזה שהרשע בבא עליו המכה הוא מתחסד ושב אל השם מיראת עונש המוטל עליו, כמו שאמר פרעה חטאתי הפעם ה' הצדיק וגו', ובעבור שזה הפעל דומה לאונס ואינו בחיריי, הנה השם יתברך מחזק את לבו כשנותן לו צד או צדדין לתלות בהן המכה ולומר שבאה במקרה ולא על צד ההשגחה האלהית,
5. תלמוד בבלי מסכת מגילה דף יב ע"א- שאלו תלמידיו את רבי שמעון בן יוחאי: מפני מה נתחייבו שונאיהן של ישראל שבאותו הדור כליה? אמר להם: אמרו אתם! - אמרו לו: מפני שנהנו מסעודתו של אותו רשע. - אם כן שבשושן יהרגו, שבכל העולם כולו אל יהרגו! - אמרו לו: אמור אתה! - אמר להם: מפני שהשתחוו לצלם. - אמרו לו: וכי משוא פנים יש בדבר? - אמר להם: הם לא עשו אלא לפנים - אף הקדוש ברוך הוא לא עשה עמהן אלא לפנים, והיינו דכתיב כי לא עִינה מלבו.
