The Torah reading this Shabbat is the one read on Yom Kippur. The Kohen Gadol enters the Kodesh K’dashim, the holiest part of the Mishkan, wearing 8 special garments. There he pronounces the hidden name of Hashem (the Shem Ha'm'forash) as part of his Avoda service to effect conciliation for the Am. He brings offerings unique to Yom Kippur, including 2 identical goats; one is "for Hashem" & is offered in the Temple, the other is "for Azazel," & is taken out to perish in the wilderness.

On Yom Kippur, one abstains from eating, drinking, anointing, wearing leather footwear, washing, & marital relations. Eating blood anytime is prohibited, as is incest, homosexuality, bestiality & child sacrifice. Marital relations are forbidden during a woman's monthly cycle.
