Three days after his brit, Avraham is visited by 3 angels in human form; Avraham rushes to welcome them despite his pain. Sara laughs upon hearing that she will bear a son next year.

Hashem says He will destroy Sodom, & Avraham pleads for Sodom to be spared; but, after intense negotiations with G-d, not even 10 righteous people can be found there. Lot, his wife & 2 daughters are rescued just before Sodom burns. Lot's wife looks back & turns into a pillar of salt. Lot's daughters fear the world is ending. They get their father drunk & through them, Moav & Ammon are born.

Avimelech abducts Sara. G-d appears to Avimelech in a dream & he releases Sara. As promised, a son Yitzchak is born to Sara & Avraham; his brit is on the 8th day. Sara tells Avraham to banish Hagar & Yishmael. Avraham is upset but Hashem tells him to listen to whatever Sara tells him. After nearly dying in the desert, Yishmael is rescued by an angel & G-d promises he'll be the progenitor of a mighty nation.

In a 10th & final test, G-d tells Avraham to take Yitzchak as an offering. Avraham does, but at the last moment, Hashem sends an angel to stop Avraham from killing Yitzchak.

"ON KVETCHES & PROPORTIONS"- Haftarah of Vayikra

Jews have an understandable tendency to Kvetch, but Yishayahu teaches us in the Haftara of Vayikra that in the process of ge'ula, we must learn to appreciate and focus on the positive and not complain so much. We should not tell G-d how to run His redemption, and in fact, we can understand the complaints about 3 AM sirens to shlep down 3 flights to the shelter with a child on each arm and a third on your shoulders on an average of once a night, but don't forget that just 2 weeks ago it used to be several times a night (and thank G-d we have shelters!). For decades the worst scenario imagined in Israel was a full-scale war with Iran, our largest, most sophisticated enemy with the most oil, Russian aid and nuclear plans. Well, that day is here, and we must profusely thank G-d and the IDF for pre-empting them with unprecedented intelligence, and professionalism to take out their entire leadership, anti-aircraft missiles and blow up their boats, planes and launchers pitifully uncontested. Our complaining shouldn't hide the glory of the G-d-sent victory, which COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANY EASIER (except were more Jews willing to share the burden).

When Galut is Necessary & When Not?

Rav Kook differentiates between sins of manners, sins of the individual and those of an entire country or society. In the latter case, gentile nations leave the stage of history, but Israel (which cannot be wiped out) is sent to exile. The class deals with the severity of a country officially licensing or condoning sin (e.g. same-sex marriages) which is much more severe than what individuals may do as private citizens.
