Question
According to Jewish law and text, is it permitted to get plastic surgery done, for appearance purposes? This surgery can be reversed and is not permanent.
Is there different laws for male and female for the question above?
Answer
Shalom
This is a complicated question with many different aspects to consider.
One cannot maim themselves or alter their body. However, if one is so stressed by their appearance that they are embarrassed and avoid going out or mixing with people they can be considered illegal. In such a case cosmetic surgery can be permitted.
Generally women are more concerned with their appearance than men, but if a man is also deeply disturbed by his looks then the halacha would be the same.
