As a follow up question, can one say that when they are connecting to God, they are connecting to the Torah? Or it only works in the reverse= when one is learning Torah they are connecting to God.

Both directions are correct, for most of what we know and understand about God, is that which we know and understand from His Torah, i.e. His actions and traits which we strive to emulate through the mitzvot and understanding of His Torah. Some may not realize it but when one connects to God, he is inevitably connecting to His Torah and people of Israel.
