Question
Hello Rabbi,
Is it wrong to think about G-d while sinning and in a room with a cross and in indecent attire?
Best,
Sophia
Answer
Shalom,
Thank you for your question. It is certainly wrong to sin! However, it is a good thing to have thoughts of G-d in such situations, In Mishlei 3:6 it teaches us “In all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight.” The Rabbis understand this to mean that “in ALL your ways” – even in those ways that are sinful. The knowledge that G-d is with a person at all times, and never departs from them, will hopefully bring about the end of the verse – a straight path.
So, even though we would rather not sin, or find ourselves in bad places, when such times do come about, the thoughts of G-d that arise in the heart are there to draw a person back – however slowly – to the good path of light and holiness.
Blessings.
